Tommy
Abbott aka Gee-Tar
Tom Abbott created the role of Gee Tar in the
original production of "West Side
Story." He left that show briefly to perform
in a Broadway engagement of Jerome Robbins'
"Ballets USA." Tommy also understudied the roles of
Action and A-Rab in New York.
He returned to
WSS, resuming his original role as well as
understudying two other Jet parts. In 1964 he
re-staged the original choreography of "West
Side Story" for the New York City Center,
and later that year joined the cast of
"Fiddler on the Roof," again for Jerome
Robbins.
His other dancing
credits include performances in
"Tovarich" and "A Funny
Thing..." His later career was spent as
director and choreographer, staging faithful
revivals of "West Side Story" and
"Fiddler" in the United States and
throughout Europe.
