Jose
De Vega aka Chino
Jose De Vega appeared on Broadway as the Shark
Juano in "West Side Story" in 1959
before appearing as Chino in the film version. He
also played Chino once again in a production in
Japan, under the direction of Tony Mordente.
Other film appearances include "Blue
Hawaii," "The Spiral Road," and
"A Covenant with Death." He spent four
years with the Modern Dance Company of Rome, and
returned to the U.S. to choreograph for Great
Leap, an Asian-American arts organization in
California, which was founded by Nobuko Miyamoto,
a fellow cast member of "West Side
Story" (who appeared under the name of
Joanne Miya.). Of Filipino and Colombian
parentage, he devoted much of his life to
eliminating stereotypes in the media and
promoting Asian-American recognition in film.Links:
